Japan’s Mitsui Group continues to demonstrate bullish confidence in the growth potential of Central Taiwan’s consumer retail market. Mitsui signed an investment agreement with the Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC) in September 2016 and has completed the required environmental impact and traffic impact assessment and approval procedures. Now, the group has confirmed that it will begin work on its Port of Taichung site later this month (August). The formal groundbreaking ceremony for the Mitsui Port of Taichung Outlet Park project is scheduled for August 21st.

TIPC and the Mitsui Group have jointly invited the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC), the Taichung City Government, and other related agencies and companies to participate in the groundbreaking ceremony. In a recent statement, Mitsui & Co. (Taiwan) Chairman Shitamachi noted that the structural design of the future Port of Taichung Outlet Park will be executed by U.S.-based architects and will embrace aesthetic elements that integrate the complex comfortably into Taichung’s port area. When completed in 2018, the first phase of development will offer 160 retail spaces for name-brand boutique retailers, restauranteurs, and entertainment service providers.

In preparation for the new Mitsui Outlet Park, TIPC is commencing landscape planning for the far end of Zhongboqu that will accentuate the port’s position as a center of Cross-Strait (Taiwan-China) passenger & cargo transit and value-added production. Also, reflecting Taichung City Government’s promotion of the port as a sea-air cargo hub and ‘Taichung downtown No. 2’, TIPC is developing coastal pathways and facilities to attract residents and visitors alike. These activities will ultimately connect the northern end of the Port of Taichung to popular area destinations such as the Gaomei Wetlands and Wuqi Fishing Port and build a critical traffic mass to the new Mitsui Outlet Park. Looking ahead, the Port of Taichung will continue its strategic repositioning, adding competitive, enticing diversity to its port operations.
