Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC) subsidiary Port of Taichung and HighTek-Century Offshore Wind Power Steel Structure, Inc. signed a contract leasing an 18.1ha plot of land in the port’s 2nd Industrial Zone to HighTek-Century for investment and commercial development. HighTek-Century will construct wind towers in the port’s offshore wind power district, with ground to be broken this year on the facility and full-scale production expected to start in 2022. The facility is expected to bring in a total investment of NT$3.88 billion and generate 400 new jobs.

HighTek-Century Offshore Wind Power Steel Structure, Inc. is a joint venture between High-Tek Group and Century Iron & Steel Industrial Co., Ltd. High-Tek Group, founded nearly 35 years ago with an initial focus on computer peripherals, reorganized in 2017 as a corporate group to take advantage of evolving global business opportunities. Responding to the strong national promotion of offshore renewable energy and public support for the domestic production of critical windfarm components, High-Tek Group partnered with Century Iron & Steel with the goal of building turbine support towers.

Port of Taichung President Sean Lu noted that windfarm component suppliers already established in his port’s offshore wind power district include Yeong Guan Energy, Red Blades Windtek, Tai-Shing Wind Power, and Siemens Gamesa. The addition of HighTek-Century, he added, will further enhance the capabilities of the district, with hopes of strong synergistic benefits and the development of a competitive industry cluster that will advance domestic windfarm production goals, generate many new job opportunities, and create sustained momentum toward government green-energy policy objectives and help make Taiwan a nuclear-free nation by 2025.
