The Port of Taichung has since 2016 landscaped the square in front of the tourist information center with a changing array of potted flowers and greenery in an effort to beautify the port environment and enhance recreational and touristic appeal. This year’s profusion of flowers is again creating a port spotlight attraction in the area in and around the Taichung Harbor Building.

The location of this year’s display was strategically chosen to dovetail with the start of work on Mitsui Outlet Park and to provide port and coastal visitors with an ideal location for flower viewing. The entire flower display covers 3,955 square meters, packed with 94,875 flowers of various species, including ixora, citron daylily, and blue daze, all bordered in Katie Mexican petunias for an eye-catching surge of color. During the height of this year’s daylily season, the Port of Taichung vigorously promoted their “sea” of yellow blossoms via the port’s Facebook page and commercial media outlets. The response was tremendous, with Taichung residents and visitors flocking to enjoy the seasonal views and take pictures. In related news, in tandem with Taichung City’s 8-year, NT$1 million urban reforestation program, the Port of Taichung has planted 40,000 athel pine (saltcedar) trees along the northern and western edges of the port’s 2nd industrial district.

As part of ongoing efforts to reinvigorate and reuse outmoded wharf-side facilities and land, the Port of Taichung during the second half of 2017 is installing a “green” tree-lined cycling path along Zhongheng 1st Road, with guardrails, bumpers, trail lighting, bollard posts, and mooring chains. Trees and shrubbery being planted along this trail include bald cypress, golden trumpet, britton ruellia, and garden croton. Aside from beautifying the port, these landscaping improvements are making the Port of Taichung an increasingly pleasant and accessible leisure and recreation space for area residents.
