The numerous road construction and road improvement projects implemented by Port of Taichung, TIPC since 2012 have directly supported the long-term Port of Taichung Comprehensive Planning and Future Development Initiative. One of these, the Zhongyi Road Extension project, in the northern section of the port, starts from the Zhongyi / Beiti roadway intersection, extends northward past Provincial Route 17, and ends at the Beiqi / Huangang North roadway intersection. The first phase of this project was completed in 2014 with the opening of a two-lane road on this route. The completion of phase two of the project in mid-February of this year 2020 has expanded this route to four lanes, significantly improving traffic flows in the port’s northern section.

The Zhongyi Road Extension project covers a total roadway length of 1.36km. The right-of-way width of 40m includes a 30m 4-lane roadway, bicycle lanes, pedestrian pathways, and storm drains and a 10m green buffer (reserved for future overpass construction use).

The budget for phase two of the Zhongyi Road Extension project was set at NT$60 million. Phase two work began in April of last year (2019) and, in spite of inclement seasonal weather and multiple meetings and adjustments made to accommodate the demands of factories in the area, project work finished on schedule.

Port of Taichung President Sean Lu remarked that, with the completion of the Zhongyi Road Extension project, the port now has comprehensive ring-road networks in both its northern and southern sections, effectively facilitating vehicular traffic flows and land development efforts. By connecting Beiti and Huangang North roads, the Zhongyi extension completes the port’s scenic northern ‘tourism circle’, connecting the Taichung Municipal Museum of Marine Ecology, the city’s coastal recreation area, the Gaomei Wetlands, and Wuqi Fishing Port. The Port of Taichung’s northern ring road plugs the port into the scenic Taiwan Strait coast and cornerstone attractions of the municipal government’s coastal development program, facilitating access for local residents to western Taichung’s best leisure and recreation destinations.
