The Port of Taichung started its construction in 1969 and officially commenced operation in 1976. Since then, it is a main engine of economic and commercial growth for central Taiwan. Bounded by the southern bank of the Dajia River to the north and the northern bank of the Dadu River to the south, the port stretches over more than 4,000 hectares. A quick and convenient highway system links us to Central Taiwan’s industrial heartland as well as the nearby Taichung International Airport. All this and more make the Port of Taichung Central Taiwan’s largest international commercial port.
The Port of Taichung is set midway between Northeast and Southeast Asia and next to Pacific Asia’s main commercial shipping route. In terms of water commerce, we have the most strategic location of any commercial port in Asia!
Innovation-oriented
Proactive and flexible in the face of rapidly changing shipping and industry needs, the Port of Taichung prioritizes innovation and sets up various kinds of “special zones” to attract & facilitate business investments in categories such as petrochemical industry, energy, warehousing & stevedoring, port service, industry, processing, logistics, restaurants, and shopping malls. Comprehensive supporting services are driving conglomerate economic benefits, and over 100 companies now have operations at the port.
To achieve success of global logistics management, the Port of Taichung sets up a FTZ of more than 600 hectares and offers advantages of low-level customs intervention, in-depth processing, bonded system, tax incentives, minimal administrative requirements, and relaxed labor restrictions. These FTZ advantages help our customers significantly cut transaction and production costs, create more added-value, and bring along more diversified business models.
The port is stepping up cooperation with local government authorities as well as exploring and developing synergies with science-based parks, industrial parks, export-processing zones, trade parks, precision-machinery parks and value-added agricultural centers in the region. Today, the Port of Taichung is a vital engine of economic growth in Central Taiwan at the forefront of economic liberalization and free trade. Performance-minded
Located astride one of the world’s busiest commercial shipping routes, the Port of Taichung maintains a main channel of 400m in width and 16m in depth at low tide. Our professional tugboat fleet satisfactorily meets the needs of modern large-sized vessels.
The Port of Taichung’s current 54 wharves are equipped to handle container, bulk & general, coal, grain, and liquid cargoes as well as passengers. We are in the process of adding another 24 to bring the total number of wharves at the port to 78. Annual cargo tonnage handled through the port broke 100 million MT in 2010.
In addition to implementing a vessel traffic services (VTS) system, automatic identification system (AIS), berth-allocation system (BAS), radio-frequency identification (RFID), optical character recognition (OCR), CCTV monitoring, International Ship and Port Facility Security Codes (ISPS), business continuity plans (BCP), and other basic infrastructure systems, we have made great strides in automation using broadband wireless networks, cargo identification & location, warehouse management, logistics tracking, and customs control. All this and more are meant to ensure the quick, safe passage and processing of ships and cargoes through the Port of Taichung.
Unique tourist attractions, breathtaking mountain scenery and bucolic rural getaways in Taichung City and beyond leave no doubt about Central Taiwan’s tourism enticements. We are a rising star in the international cruise ship circle and a regular hub for cross-Strait ferry services. The Port of Taichung is a good neighbor of the ecologically important Gaomei Wetlands and Dadu Estuary Wildlife Refuge bordering the Port of Taichung on the north and south, respectively. Committed to preventing pollution and protecting the environment, we are moving forward with policies to cut CO2 emissions and to utilize renewable energy. Further, we will continue our endeavor to sustain our greenbelt and 200+ hectares of forested parkland open to the public for walking, jogging, cycling and simply enjoying.
